Neutral Wedding Flowers: Ange & James' Intimate Bay of Plenty Wedding

When Ange and James planned their wedding, they knew exactly what they were drawn to — natural, relaxed wedding flowers in a soft neutral colour palette.

Their flowers mixed fresh and dried elements, with different shapes, textures and heights rather than everything feeling perfectly arranged. Quicksand roses brought in soft blush and warm neutral tones, while grasses, dried foliage and delicate cosmos kept everything loose and natural.

At the time, we would have called this boho wedding flowers. While wedding flower trends have changed since then, there are parts of this style that still work beautifully today.

Neutral Wedding Flowers Don't have to be boring

Neutral wedding flowers don't have to mean everything is white.

For Ange and James, we used creams, warm neutrals, blush and touches of golden brown.

Using different tones within the same colour palette gave the flowers depth without needing lots of different colours.

This is something I still use when designing weddings today. If you're drawn to neutral wedding flowers, adding a little variation in tone and texture can stop everything from blending together.

Mixing fresh and dried wedding flowers

One of the main features of this wedding was the mix of fresh and dried flowers.

Fresh quicksand roses and delicate cosmos sat alongside dried grasses, palms and other natural elements.

Mixing the two gave the arrangements plenty of texture and suited the relaxed style Ange and James were drawn to.

You don't have to choose between fresh or dried wedding flowers either. Used together, they can create a completely different look from using either one on its own.

Start with what you're drawn to

You don't need to know whether your wedding style is "boho", "modern", "romantic" or anything else.

Start by looking at what you keep saving.

Are you drawn to neutral wedding flowers?

Do you like dried grasses and natural textures?

Do you keep saving soft blush and cream colour palettes?

Or perhaps it's the relaxed shape of the arrangements you like rather than the actual flowers.

Those details are much more useful to me as a wedding florist than putting a name on your wedding style.

Ange and James were clear about what they liked, which gave me a really good starting point for bringing all of those ideas together.
